If you want to spice things up in your relationship, it’s a great idea to make your environment more inviting.  The bedroom is such an important place because you spend the most intimate moments there with your partner.  Just a few tweaks here and there can make a huge difference.

What you should avoid in the bedroom

  • Get rid of all clutter and clothes that are laying around
  • Avoid all technology in the room.  No phones or television.  Not only is it very bad for your sleep quality, but it also distracts you from your partner.
  • Pictures can be distracting too.  When you are getting jiggy, you don’t want a picture of your father in law staring at you.

So now to the real work, how to bring that romantic atmosphere in the room

Stimulate the sense of smell

We often only focus on visual stimulation. However, smell is an extremely strong sensation that stimulates the brain and senses. Smell is very important to create the desired atmosphere.

Some basics to keep the room smelling fresh, open the windows every morning. Make sure the bed sheets are replaced on a regular base.

Use essential oils that have a sensual effect

  • Ylang Ylang
  • Rose
  • Jasmine
  • Clary sage
  • Fennel
  • Neroli
  • Sandal Wood (for a more masculine smell)
  • Vanilla

Use a diffuser to spread the essential oils. Never use artificial smells, especially not in the bedroom.  You are in this room for multiple hours every day.  Inhaling chemical odours is not a good idea.

Regularly put fresh sheets on the bed and open the windows often. Bad odours can be a big turn off.

Stimulate the sense of touch

Satin sheets may look a bit strange, but they have a great sensation on the skin. If you really don’t want satin sheets, they can be a bit tacky, find the softest fabric you can find.

There are all other sorts of textures you can bring into the bedroom.  Think some furry decorative cushions. Curtains in a heavy, interesting, rich fabric can create a warm feeling.  Thick fabricks also dampen sounds, making the bedroom better acoustically, which can improve sleep quality.

Romantic lighting

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that we are big fans of lighting to set the mood.  No different in the bedroom. Opt as much as possible for lights with a red shine. Red Light has multiple good aspects that make it a good choice for the bedroom.  Red light is sensual, but it also stimulates the production of melatonin that makes you sleepy.  It’s actually very natural.  As the sun sets, the light of the sun becomes redder too.  Hence the effect.

You can go for candlelight too, but make sure that they are on a safe distance so your bedroom doesn’t catch fire.

Plants make us feel more relaxed

It is a misconception that plants in the bedroom are unhealthy.  It is true that some plants consume some oxygen at night, but that amount is so minimal, that it is insignificant.  But plants do filter the air and humidify it.  But the main reason for having plants in your bedroom may be the relaxing effect they have on humans.  Nature calms us.  Many studies have been done on having plants in the office and showed less stressful employees.

As a consequence, less stress improves our mood and the attraction towards our partners.  It’s all very logical actually, for thousands of years we lived in nature.

Create your cocoon

A Four-poster bed has a very romantic connotation. This romantic perception comes from the “cocooning” effect four-poster beds have. You don’t need to buy a whole new bed, but you can recreate this cocooning effect.  You can drape vales down from the ceiling or make a construction on the ceiling or bedposts.

Bedroom Temperature

The bedroom temperature is a tricky one in my opinion.  For sleeping, you preferably want a cool room.  For other bedroom activities, you may want to increase the temperature.

Another detail in bedroom climate is air humidity. This is something that I personally think is very important. As dry air can obstruct your sinuses and make it hard to breathe thru your nose. For that very reason, dry air can actually increase chances that your partner starts snoring.  And well… snoring does not improve the romantic atmosphere in the bedroom 🙂

Bedroom colours

Interior design trends change fast. For the bedroom whatever you do, try to keep to warm colours.  Even if you use white, a little dash of yellow or red makes the white that little warmer.  Ask some pro colour advice if you don’t know.

Your bedroom outfit

Probably the most important thing to bring the romantic atmosphere to the bedroom is YOU! Some good looking underwear does miracles.  That goes for guys as well as girls.  Pyjamas can also be great for a cuddly cocoon night at home.
